CANACONA – Stating the narrow Canacona-Cuncolim NH-66 road is turned dangerous by overloaded, overspeeding commercial and mining trucks, Congress called for immediate stoppage of plying of heavy vehicles till the road is suitably repaired.
A memorandum is submitted to the Chief Secretary and other government authorities by GPCC General Secretary Janardhan Bhandari to appraise the danger of overloaded and over-speeding commercial vehicles and mining trucks on the Cuncolim-Canacona section of NH-66 road.
Bhandari said that the commuters, students and others, be it on private vehicles or public transportation, are at grave threat of meeting an accident, as the already road is heavily congested with unruly transit of heavy vehicles.
“Allowing rash driving by way of overloaded and over-speeding vehicles is nothing but giving an open invitation to accidents resulting in loss of lives,” Bhandari said.
Stating Congress’s mission against the bad roads will be consistently be taken forward, Bhandari demanded a blanket ban on mining trucks on the Margao-Canacona road until all the problems on this route are sorted out and requested the transport department provide a strict vigil on the road discipline to avoid mishaps on this route. “There is mostly traffic congestion from Margao to Canacona and vice-versa, and this needs to be disciplined to avert major accidents that can lead to loss of lives,” he said.
Janardhan Bhandari also alleged tax evasion at the State borders and has also demanded installing functional weighing machines on all the gates to check evasion of taxes by imposing stern actions by way of fines and penalties against the violators.
