New Delhi: A Congress councilor, Phuntsog Stanzin Tsepag, has been booked over violent protests in Ladakh that left four people dead and nearly 90 injured. The unrest saw mobs torch the BJP office and the Ladakh Hill Council Secretariat in Leh, prompting curfew and deployment of ITBP, CRPF, and local police.
Authorities blamed climate activist Sonam Wangchuk for allegedly provoking the crowd with his speeches during a 15-day hunger strike demanding statehood. Wangchuk denied responsibility, saying no party could mobilize thousands of protesters on its own.
The violence comes amid growing anger over the Centre’s refusal to grant Ladakh statehood and Sixth Schedule protections, despite multiple rounds of talks with local leaders.
