PANAJI: The Congress has warned of nationwide protests if Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar does not resign within a month, according to IYC Secretary and Goa Pradesh Youth Congress in-charge Swapnil Patil.
Patil said the Congress high command had called for Kumar’s resignation and warned that the party would launch protests across the country if the demand was not met within the stipulated period.
In Goa, the protests would be held at various levels, including in villages, panchayats and on the streets, Patil said.
Patil also called for the upcoming elections in Goa to be conducted through ballot papers instead of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). He said the demand was linked to concerns raised by the party over the credibility and transparency of the electoral process.
The Congress has been seeking greater scrutiny of the electoral process and has raised questions over the use of EVMs. The party’s proposed protests in Goa are expected to focus on these concerns and its demand for changes in the voting system.
