CORTALIM: Cortalim Zilla Panchayat (ZP) member Merciana Vas inaugurated the long-awaited asphalting of internal roads at Falvado in Velsao on Wednesday, providing much-needed relief to the locals. The project was initiated in the presence of Velsao Sarpanch Diana Gouveia, panchayat members Fransisca Baretto, social worker Roquezinho D’Souza, and other dignitaries.
Speaking to the media, ZP Merciana Vas stated that the project was funded under ZP resources at an estimated cost of ₹5.6 lakh. “The roads in this area have been in poor condition for a long time, and the heavy rains in recent months caused further damage, inconveniencing the residents. This project aims to address those issues,” she said.
Vas revealed that this initiative is one among many development projects planned for Velsao. “I have proposed and secured sanctions for 12 projects this year, doubling the six projects undertaken last year. Although funds are fully utilized for this year, I am exploring other avenues to complete two pending proposals. I remain committed to working for the people who elected me, irrespective of what critics may say,” she added.
Velsao Sarpanch Diana Gouveia expressed gratitude to Vas for her efforts in addressing the needs of the village. “ZP Merciana Vas is doing excellent work, and we are thankful for the developmental projects, including the asphalting of roads in my ward. We hope these works are completed on time without any inconvenience to the public,” Gouveia said.
Social worker Roquezinho D’Souza lauded the contributions of Merciana Vas and her husband, Cortalim MLA Anton Vas. “Cortalim is fortunate to have a ‘double engine’ of development with MLA Anton Vas and ZP Merciana Vas. While the MLA oversees large-scale projects, Merciana focuses on village-level works. Her commitment to utilizing allocated funds efficiently and addressing long-pending issues is commendable. We are confident that she will continue to resolve the people’s concerns and drive progress,” D’Souza remarked.
