KUNDAIM: A major fire broke out at Saba Traders Scrap Yard in Kundaim during the early hours of today, gutting the premises and triggering a massive firefighting operation involving more than 10 fire tenders.
The blaze prompted an extensive response from the Fire and Emergency Services, with fire tenders from headquarters, Margao, Ponda, Old Goa, Mapusa and Bicholim rushed to the spot.
Firefighters battled the flames for over six hours, working to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby industrial units at the Kundaim Industrial Estate.
A single entry point to the scrap yard posed a major challenge for firefighting personnel, restricting access to the affected area. Two JCB machines were deployed to remove the scrap material, which largely comprised cables, to help firefighters reach the source of the fire.
Fire personnel said the flames outside the premises had been doused. However, extinguishing the fire within the enclosed area was expected to take more time.
The incident comes just days after a major fire at Vasco Sunday Market, raising fresh concerns over fire safety and emergency preparedness.
