PANAJI: The Reserve Bank of India, Panjim, and Bank of Maharashtra, Bambolim Branch, are accused of discriminating against and insulting people with disabilities in a complaint submitted to the Executive Magistrate by the Disability Rights Association of Goa (DRAG).
“We wish to bring to your notice that the Bank of Maharashtra Bambolim Branch and ATM is not accessible for persons with disabilities, thereby discriminating against persons with disabilities and in violation of Section 3 and Section 40 of the Rights of Persons with Disability Act 2016,” stated
DRAG President Avelino de Sa in a representation. They have built a ramp that is in violation of Section 40 of the Rights of Persons with Disability Act of 2016 and puts human life at danger.
He mentioned that the bank just posted a notice announcing that elderly and disabled people would be eligible for door-to-door service.
“This is an insult to persons with disability as it is against the principles of non-discrimination and equal opportunity to persons with disability,” he stated.
In accordance with Sections 7 and 92 of the Rights of Persons with Disability Act of 2016, the DRAG has urged the magistrate to order the police to file a complaint against the regional manager of the Bank of Maharashtra, Panjim, and the manager of the Bambolim branch, alleging insults and discrimination against people with disabilities.
He added that although DRAG had brought up the aforementioned issue with the Reserve Bank of India’s Panjim Branch, they have not yet taken any steps to address it.
The DRAG has asked the magistrate to order the police to include the Reserve Bank of India’s regional director as a party to the case.
