CANACONA: A Car driven and occupied by four Naval staff at Karwar Seabird rammed their Car into a Stationery truck at Madditolop in Loliem-Polem village on Thursday evening.
According to the Police, the Car bearing registration no.UP 61 BA4595, heading towards Karwar swirled and rammed into a stationary Truck (KA-19 AB-3962) parked on the right side of the NH-66 near a Petrol Pump at Madditolop in the village of Loliem-Polem. The truck on the way to Canacona was parked at least 8 metres away from the road, and the Truck driver was resting inside the truck cabin when he was shaken awake after the Car rammed its rear side. Luckily, the Car, which strayed from left to right-side, missed hitting at least two vehicles from Karwar to Margao’s direction.
Interestingly, many people, including a few drivers of parked heavy vehicles in the area, gathered around and were surprised to see a driver still sitting behind the wheels, three other occupants were peacefully sleeping inside, and no one was attempting to get out. Including the Driver, the other backseat occupants (all youths) were noticed to be heavily drunk and were literarily dozing –off in their Seats and unmindful of what had happened to them or their Car. The fourth Youth sitting next to the driver and slightly in a better position to walk, came out almost after 10 minutes as people sought to persuade the others to come to safety.
Meanwhile, police personnel reached the spot and, noticing the drunken state of every occupant of the Car, took them into their control and took them to the police station.
After the youths were informed that they were the Naval Staff working at Seabird Karwar, the Naval Officers were told, who later visited the Canacona police station. Canacona Police registered a case against the Naval Staff under the 184 section of the M V Act for rash and Negligent Driving and imposed a fine of Rs.1000/- against the car’s driver. All the Car occupants were then referred for Alcohol Tests, and according to police, their tests are still awaited while going to press.
After paying the penalty, the drunk youths/Naval Staff were reportedly handed-over to their officers/seniors who were called at Canacona police station.
According to sources, the four Naval staff working (at least two are natives of Jhansi-UP including the Car) at Seabird, Karwar, all in their youth, had travelled in their Car to enjoy the beaches in Canacona. The youth were reportedly drunk heavily while enjoying the beaches at Agonda and Palolem and, while returning, had reportedly hit someone somewhere in Canacona on their way, settled the claim unofficially and continued to drive, with a heavily drunk driving the car, before again going-off the road, swirling the car and hitting to a stationary truck parked on the opposite side of the road near petrol Pump at Madditolop.
