CURCHOREM: “The then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had imposed Emergency in India in 1975, and this move was undemocratic. Such kinds of things should not repeat today,” says PWD Minister Nilesh Cabral in Curchorem.
During the public function of observation of the black day, PWD minister Nilesh Cabral condemned the political move made by the former PM Indira Gandhi, calling it an undemocratic decision.
Further, Cabral said the reason behind observing this black day is that our younger generation should be aware of what happened in the past during the emergency period.
He further said that we should not forget that during the emergency, the country’s opposition leaders were put in jail for no reason, and it was done for Indira Gandhi’s own sake.
On this occasion, BJP block president Vishwas Sawant, secretary Rajendra Vasta, ex-Curchorem BJP block president Ashish Karmali, and Mahila Mandal president Jasmine Braganza also shared their thoughts.
Sudhir Parab, who was jailed during the time of emergency, said that On 25th June 1975, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imposed an emergency on a nation which was an attack on democracy. Opposition ministers were arrested and put in jail. She tried to do the things which were against democracy.
The whole nation was in a state of prison, said Sudhir Parab.
During these days, under the leadership of Jayprakash Narayan, the movement to free the country from this prison started.
The RSS organisation reached out to everyone fighting against this and included them in this movement, and started satyagraha in every district. In Goa, both the north and south districts were also part of this. In our south Goa, under the leadership of Vishwanath Arlekar and his son Rajendra Arlekar the satyagraha began. Even here, the arrested people were fighting for truth and a good cause. These people were kept for two months in jail, and the leaders were kept for two years under MISA.
