Panaji: The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has imposed a penalty of Rs 5.35 cr on five units for encroachment carried out in river Zuari.
The GSPCB has penalised seven companies M/s. A. V. Salgaonkar. (Cortalim Shipyard and Engineers Pvt Ltd) – Rs 15507180; M/s. Shaparia Dock & Steel Co. Pvt. Ltd. Rs 6376836; M/s. Sardessai Engineering Works Rs 4758523; M/s Desa Engineering Works Rs 4010816; M/s. Vipul Shipping Engineering Works Rs 6823479; M/s Sachida Engineering Works Rs 4451831; M/s. Ferromar Shipping Pvt. Ltd Rs 11811327. All totalling to Rs 5.35 cr.
The GSPCB notice reads, “In the matter of Salu D’Souza, NGT has directed the GSPCB to calculate the Environmental Compensation (EC) and polluter pays penalty to be levied in accordance to law”.
Following the orders, the Board conducted inspection of the said units for verification of consent compliance on 02/01/2021.
“The Board had issued Show cause Notice for violation observed during inspection regarding non-compliance to consent condition and the Directorate of Settlement & Land Records DSLR) has conducted survey of the units in view of the above referred order. During inspection it was observed that the units encroached beyond the permitted by Captain of Ports (COP),” the notice reads.
It further said to restore the area to its original, desilting/removal of earth field is required to be carried out and retaining wall to be constructed to protect the banks of river
In view of the above facts the managements of units is directed to Show Cause within 7 days of receipt of this notice as to why Polluter pays penalty should not be levied against you for encroachment in river and causing environmental damage and restoration of river.
