VALPOI: A tragic road accident on June 27, 2025, near Ganapati Temple, Redye Ghat, Valpoi, has left one person dead and another injured after a reckless Eicher truck driver collided with an Activa scooter.
The incident occurred around 8:15 PM when Kanifnath, a 39-year-old resident of Mawadikade, Pathar, Purandar, Pune, Maharashtra, was driving an Eicher truck (registration number MH-12-WX-2564) in a negligent and dangerous manner.
As he approached the Redye Ghat area, Kanifnath reportedly changed lanes without warning, striking an Activa scooter traveling in the opposite direction.
The collision caused serious injuries to both the rider and the pillion rider of the scooter, who were identified as Ganesh Betkiker and Varsha Pokle.
Varsha, the 36-year-old pillion rider, was tragically declared dead on arrival by medical officials at the Community Health Centre (CHC) Valpoi. Ganesh, the scooter rider, suffered significant injuries but is currently receiving treatment.
Shockingly, the truck driver fled the scene without providing assistance or notifying authorities or emergency services.
The police were immediately alerted, and an offense was registered under multiple sections, including Section 134(a)(b) of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, for failure to stop and assist after an accident, among other charges.
Raghunath, an Assistant Sub-Inspector at Valpoi Police Station, filed the case (M.V. Accident No. 14/2025) on June 29, 2025.
The investigation is currently underway, led by PSI Kushali Naik of Valpoi Police Station. Authorities are working to trace the truck driver, Kanifnath, who has yet to be apprehended.
