PANAJI: The State government has extended the grant-in-aid program for Sanjivani Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana Ltd. until March 31 in a significant relief to the workers in sugar factories.
“The government has decided to extend the financial benefit to the factory until March 31 or until the employees take voluntary retirement,” said Director of Agriculture Sandeep Fol Desai in a notification.
There are about 170 workers at the factory, 99 of them are regular employees. Since 2019, the State government has been providing financial help to the factory, which had been operating at a loss for decades.
Sources claim that the government has been contributing Rs 6-7 crore in grants each year to help with salary payments.
According to sources, since the government is unable to continue providing grants, this may be the last financial assistance given to the plant. According to sources, the employees have once more been asked to choose voluntary retirement.
