PANAJI: Within 12 nautical miles of Indian waters, anyone from the nation is permitted to go fishing, according to Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Deputy Inspector General Manoj Bhatia’s statement on Thursday.
He said, “There is nothing called illegal fishing,” when addressing media. When fisherman from another nation enter your water or territory, it is considered illegal fishing. It is not considered unlawful fishing if a Maharashtra fisherman is fishing in Goa; nevertheless, it is considered illegal fishing if a foreigner fishes here. It is a matter of state. In terms of the Coast Guard, we address any problems that may arise.
According to Bhatia, the state has a fishing zone of 12 nautical miles, within which fisherman from neighboring states are welcome to fish, and Goan fishermen are also free to fish in other states. It is a question of two states cooperating, and communication may resolve the problem,” Bhatia stated.
He claimed that extra boats will be given to State police so they may patrol alongside Goan fishermen.
Bhatia, however, asserted that large boats are not permitted in areas used for traditional fishing. “Action is being taken against the large ships that are entering the waters around Goa. Because the coastal police lacked the necessary vessels, they were unable to act earlier, he claimed.
