PORVORIM:
Aam Aadmi Party’s Benaulim MLA Capt Venzy Viegas criticised the BJP government for its negligence and inaction, leading to the severe flooding in Benaulim. On the second day of the assembly session, Capt Venzy Viegas expressed deep concern over the government’s failure to address the ongoing flooding-like crisis in Benaulim.
Viegas highlighted that the Sawant government has repeatedly ignored the urgent demands of Benaulim residents, who have been calling for the construction of a western bypass on stilts for years. Despite strong support from many MLAs when this issue was raised in last year’s assembly session, the government has taken no action.
“The Sawant government has ignored the recommendations of their own Union Minister Nitin Gadkari’s expert team, which suggested the construction of retaining walls, nullahs, desilting, and dredging of River Sal to prevent flooding. Are we even listening to the experts? The flooding in Benaulim is a manmade disaster due to the government’s neglect”, said Viegas.
Adding he said, “This is not just a natural calamity; it’s a direct result of the government’s failure to act on expert advice. The BJP government must take immediate responsibility and implement the necessary measures to prevent further flooding and ensure the safety of our citizens.”
