VASCO: As many as 100 free helmets were distributed in the Dabolim constituency during the 13th Road Safety Week program.
The helmets were distributed by Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho in the presence of Mormugao Municipal Council MMC Chairperson Girish Borker, Chicalim Dy Sarpanch Aishwarya Korgaonkar, Vasco Traffic PI Shailesh Narvekar and others.
The team distributed helmets to many riders who were caught unawares during the Road Safety Week program conducted at the Chicalim junction at the hands of Minister Mauvin Godinho.
Speaking to the media, Godinho said that the gesture aimed at promoting safety gear among motorists, especially in light of rising road accidents in the state.
“When I interacted with the people, some people said that their helmets had spoilt or damaged or some did not have money to buy new helmets. However, helmet use is a simple yet crucial step in preventing serious injuries and wearing a helmet can save precious lives. Some people are really poor and though they are worried about safety, they don’t really have the money or don’t want to spend so much money for a helmet. This means that we may have to become practical and realise their needs and offer them helmets. This free distribution of helmets is a small initiative to encourage people to prioritise their safety while on the road,” said Godinho.
Godinho said that 100 free helmets would be distributed to people in the Dabolim constituency and around 1000 free helmets would be distributed across Goa through the Transport Department.
“As a minister, I am trying to engage with the citizens and urging them to follow traffic regulations, and avoid spending and using of mobile phones while driving. Road safety is everyone’s responsibility and we have to make a collective effort to keep our roads safe. As of now, stressing on helmets for Pillion riders as well will be too much to ask in one go. We will make it happen but In a phased manner,” said Godinho.
