MANGALORE: The Global Konknni Forum (GKF) and All Script Associations of Konknni declared at a major gathering in Mangalore that they will convene an Akhil Bharatiya Konknni Maha-Sabha in Goa on January 3. Discussions about the script issue will be the main topic of this meeting.
The Global Konknni Forum (GKF) President Kennedy Afonso declared that Ravindra Bhavan in Margao would host the next Akhil Bharatiya Konknni Maha-Sabha. This location will act as a hub for conversations around the script problem, bringing together different Konknni community stakeholders for fruitful cooperation and discourse.
The Maha Sabha wants Romi and Nagri to have equal status under the Goan official language act, for Roman script Konknni to be introduced into schools from first to Xth grade, for all scripts to be respected, for Sahitya Akademi to grant them equal rights, and for the Konknni Advisory Board’s selection process to be made more transparent, democratic, and approved by the Sahitya Akademi after being chosen by the respective script associations.
For the first time, a historic decision has been made to convene a grand Maha Sabha that will include all Konknni associations within the Konkan region. Every year, this event will take place,” Afonso stated.
He added that this AIKMS will showcase the rich diversity of the Konknni language and its culture. It will also reveal the injustice done to the four Konknni scripts by the Goa government, which excluded Roman Script Konknni from the OLA and the Sahitya Akademi by designating Nagri as the only official Konknni script without putting it through any linguistic testing.
“Konkani speaking people from Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra and Goa will take part in the Maha Sabha” , he said.
In order to make this first AIKMS a huge success, GKF also asked the Titar Academy, all Konknni Associations, and other associations to sponsor it.
