PANAJI: Goa Chief Minister, Dr. Pramod Sawant, expressed strong support for the resolution to conduct a caste-based census, calling it a “step in the right direction.”
The CM made this statement following his participation in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Chief Ministers’ Conclave, which was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Addressing the media, Dr. Sawant emphasized that the proposed census will provide a clear and comprehensive picture of the social and economic status of every community in India.
He noted that understanding these nuances is crucial to formulating more effective policies and ensuring that resources are allocated in a way that addresses the needs of all groups.
“The need of the hour is to gain an accurate understanding of where different communities stand in terms of social and economic progress. A caste-based census will help us understand these disparities more clearly, and allow for better-targeted interventions,” said Dr. Sawant.
The resolution for the caste-based census has been a topic of debate in the political sphere, with some advocating for its potential to uplift underprivileged communities, while others have raised concerns about the implications of such data on social dynamics.
In his statement, the CM also highlighted the significance of the NDA meeting, which discussed various national issues, including governance, development, and security. The conclave aimed to align the priorities of state and central governments and enhance collaboration between them for the nation’s progress.
The move to conduct the caste-based census is expected to draw significant attention in the coming months, as it could shape future government policies and provide new insights into India’s socio-economic landscape.
