PANAJI: Goa could receive the southwest monsoon earlier than usual this year, following indications from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) that the monsoon is likely to reach Kerala ahead of schedule.
According to weather forecasts, the monsoon is expected to arrive over Kerala around May 26, nearly a week before its normal onset date of June 1. If the system continues to advance at the present pace, Goa may also experience the arrival of monsoon rains earlier than normal.
Meteorological officials have indicated that conditions remain favourable for the further advancement of the monsoon over the Arabian Sea and adjoining regions.
Goa has already been witnessing intermittent pre-monsoon showers, gusty winds and overcast skies over the past few days, bringing temporary relief from the summer heat.
An early monsoon is expected to benefit the agricultural sector and improve water availability across the State. At the same time, authorities are likely to intensify preparedness measures for heavy rain, waterlogging and weather-related emergencies during the coming weeks.
