PANAJI: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced on Sunday that the state, which now has a 94% literacy rate, will reach 100% literacy by May 30, Statehood Day.
Approximately 94% of Goans are currently literate, he stated after launching the ULLAS MELA 2025, New India Literacy Program. By May 30, Goa Statehood Day, we hope to have 100% of the population literate.
According to the Chief Minister, the Government of India’s New India Literacy Programme is the program that was started to identify illiterate people and provide them with basic literacy instruction.
He stated that the program is available to people from Goa and other states, and that tests are administered by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) to determine whether they have acquired basic literacy.
It’s interesting to note that last July, the Chief Minister declared that the Goa government aims to declare the state completely literate by December 19, 2024.
He had said that efforts were on to educate the illiterate population which was around two per cent in the State.
Barring the three talukas of Quepem, Canacona and Sanguem, illiterate population in the rest of Goa has been identified and trained, the CM stated.
