New Delhi: India’s injury concerns intensified on Sunday after all rounder Washington Sundar was reportedly ruled out of the remaining matches of the ODI series against New Zealand following a rib injury sustained in the opening game at Vadodara.
The 26 year old experienced discomfort in his left lower rib area during New Zealand’s innings. After completing five overs and conceding 27 runs, Sundar walked off the field midway and did not return for the rest of the bowling innings. The incident immediately raised concerns within the Indian camp, prompting medical attention.
Despite the setback, Sundar displayed notable determination by coming out to bat during India’s chase. Slotted in at number eight, he remained unbeaten and played a steady role as India secured a four wicket victory to take a 1 0 lead in the three match series. His presence at the crease helped calm nerves during a crucial phase of the chase.
India captain Shubman Gill later confirmed that Sundar was suffering from a side strain and would undergo scans to determine the severity of the injury. Subsequent assessments reportedly led to the decision to rule him out of the rest of the ODI series as a precautionary measure.
During the run chase, Sundar also shared an important 27 run partnership with KL Rahul. Rahul later revealed that he was aware of Sundar’s discomfort but did not realise the extent of the injury at the time. He credited the all rounder for rotating the strike effectively and contributing exactly what the situation demanded.
Sundar’s absence adds to India’s growing list of injured players. Wicketkeeper batter Rishabh Pant was earlier ruled out of the series due to a side strain, while Tilak Varma is set to miss the opening T20Is against New Zealand following surgery for a groin injury.
On the field, India managed to overcome these concerns through strong batting performances. Virat Kohli’s fluent 93, along with half centuries from Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer, guided the team to a successful chase of 301 with six balls remaining. While the victory provided momentum, the injuries have posed fresh selection challenges for the remainder of the tour.
