New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Bangladesh Prime Minister and Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, describing her as a leader whose contributions to Bangladesh and India Bangladesh relations will be remembered.
In a message shared on social media, the Prime Minister said he was deeply saddened by the passing of Khaleda Zia in Dhaka and extended heartfelt condolences to her family and the people of Bangladesh. He said her role as the country’s first woman Prime Minister and her efforts toward national development and bilateral relations had left a lasting impact.
Recalling his interaction with her, Modi said he fondly remembered meeting Khaleda Zia in Dhaka in 2015 and expressed hope that her vision and legacy would continue to guide and strengthen the partnership between the two neighbouring countries. He also prayed for peace for her soul and strength for her family to bear the loss.
Khaleda Zia passed away at the age of 80 while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party confirmed that she had been battling multiple health complications in recent years.
Earlier this month, Prime Minister Modi had expressed concern over her deteriorating health and had conveyed India’s willingness to extend all possible support to Bangladesh during her treatment. Her death marks the end of an era in Bangladesh’s political history, with tributes pouring in from across the region.
