PORVORIM: Proceedings in the Goa Legislative Assembly today witnessed high drama as opposition benches, led by Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao, disrupted Governor P. Ashok Gajapati Raju’s address over the tragic Arpora nightclub fire that claimed 25 lives.
Alemao demanded that the Governor begin his speech with a reference to the tragedy and urged the government to fix accountability.
Despite repeated interventions from Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Speaker Ganesh Gaonkar asking him to follow House protocol, Alemao persisted.
In protest, opposition MLAs from Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, Goa Forward Party, and Revolutionary Goans Party rushed into the well of the House, holding placards reading “Where is Safety” and “Bankruptcy,” and raising slogans against the government.
The situation escalated as marshals were called in to restore order, temporarily halting the Governor’s speech.
The protesting members were eventually escorted out of the Assembly by security personnel, allowing the Governor to continue his address.
