PATRADEVI: In a swift interstate operation, Mopa Airport Police arrested a container truck driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident at Patradevi after tracking him into Maharashtra using CCTV footage and eyewitness inputs.
According to police, the incident came to light on May 21 at around 6:35 am when Amresh Mote, a resident of Torxem, Pernem, informed the Patradevi Police Outpost that a container truck travelling from Torxem towards Patradevi had knocked down a male pedestrian on the highway and fled the scene, leaving the victim critically injured.
Police later identified the victim as Narayan Sahadev Sawal (65), a resident of Sawalwada, Patradevi, who sustained fatal injuries in the accident.
During inquiry, police learned that eyewitness Lakhu Raghoba Naik had chased the container truck up to Insuli in Maharashtra, but could not stop the vehicle.
Following the alert, a special police team led by PI Neenad Deulkar, along with PSI Swapnil Kinalkar, PSI Ashish Parab, HC Tukaram Chavan, PCs Laxman Sawaldessai, Sakharam Ghure, Krishna Chari, Astik Naik and HC Milind Mote of Mopa Airport Traffic Cell launched a search operation.
Using CCTV footage collected from the border check-post, the team traced the truck to Lanje in Maharashtra and apprehended accused Mohammed Ajim Khan (25), a native of Uttar Pradesh, along with the container truck bearing registration number MH-12-VT-7048.
Mopa Airport Police have registered an offence under Sections 281 and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita along with Sections 134(a)(b) of the Motor Vehicles Act. Further investigation is in progress.
