PERNEM: Mopa Airport Police have arrested a container truck driver in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of a 65-year-old pedestrian near the new toll plaza at Torxem on NH-66.
According to police, the accident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday when the truck was travelling from Torxem towards Patradevi. Investigators said the driver allegedly drove the Ashok Leyland container truck in a rash and negligent manner and knocked down pedestrian Narayan Sawal, a resident of Patradevi in Pernem.
The victim sustained grievous injuries in the impact and later succumbed to them.
Police further stated that the truck driver fled the scene without informing authorities or arranging medical assistance for the injured man.
Following the registration of the case, police launched an investigation and, based on intelligence inputs and witness statements, identified and tracked down the accused driver.
The accused, identified as 25-year-old Mohd Ajim Khan from Uttar Pradesh, was arrested later the same night.
Mopa Airport Police have registered offences under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Motor Vehicles Act. Further investigation is being conducted by PSI Swapnil Kinelkar.
