RUMDAMOL: With the exception of a few minor incidents on the occasion of Bakri Eid, the day went off without incident in the delicate Rumdamol Housing Board. However, the Goa Police remained vigilant in order to maintain law and order.
A group of angry Muslims complained in the morning to the police stations at Margao, Fatorda, and Maina-Curtorim about what they claimed was a disparaging post made by a store owner that offended their religious feelings.
A brief altercation involving the shop owner’s brother occurred following the arrival of approximately twenty to thirty young people from the minority community to question the proprietor.
The police stationed officers outside the business owned by the individual who uploaded the post as a precaution. Both parties filed complaints and counter-complaints with the police.
When Siddesh Bhagat, his wife, and supporters went to the Housing Board in the evening to wish people a happy Bakri Eid, tensions in the air rose once more. According to the police, both groups got into fistfights before being taken to the hospital for tests.
The Muslim group claimed that the shopkeeper attempted to sabotage the communal harmony and goodwill between Muslims and Hindus in the Housing Board. They had filed complaints at the police stations in Margao, Fatorda, and Maina-Curtorim. “We have requested that the shopkeeper’s offenses be reported to the Housing Board by the police.
Following the incident over the social media post on Monday morning, South Goa District Superintendent of Police Sunita Sawant informed the media that police were stationed at the Housing Board in full force as a precaution. “Police have arrested people from both sides and we have received complaints and countercomplaints from both sides,” the spokeswoman stated.
