DHARBANDORA: A picnic outing turned tragic on Sunday after a 40-year-old IIT student, identified as Imtiaz Hussain from Ladakh, allegedly drowned while swimming in the Okhamb River at Dharbandora.
According to sources, Hussain was part of a group of eight IIT students who had gone to the riverside location for a picnic. During the outing, Hussain reportedly entered the river for a swim but is suspected to have drowned after failing to return to the surface.
The incident triggered panic among the group, who immediately alerted local authorities. Personnel from the police and Fire and Emergency Services rushed to the spot and launched a search operation in the river to trace the missing student.
Officials said rescue efforts were continuing till late evening, with teams conducting an intensive search in and around the river stretch.
