New Delhi: The INDIA bloc has announced a series of nationwide protests against the Election Commission, including a march by Opposition MPs to the poll panel’s office in New Delhi on October 6 and a major rally in the national capital on November 1.
The decision was taken at a meeting of Opposition parties on Wednesday as the alliance intensified its campaign over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and what it describes as “vote chori”.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said INDIA bloc parties would organise “Save Democracy” marches and demonstrations across districts from October 2 to 8. All Opposition MPs from both Houses of Parliament are scheduled to march to the Election Commission on October 6.
The alliance also plans to seek an appointment with President Droupadi Murmu in the second week of October. Opposition leaders intend to submit a representation highlighting their concerns over electoral processes and what they describe as threats to democratic institutions.
The INDIA bloc has further planned five major rallies across the country during October and November, with their dates and locations to be finalised. The campaign will culminate in a large rally in Delhi on November 1, focused on the Opposition’s allegations of electoral irregularities.
The protests come amid controversy surrounding the Special Intensive Revision of voter lists and reported differences within the Election Commission over certain decisions connected with the exercise.
The Opposition has also decided to approach the Supreme Court and seek faster hearings in cases related to SIR and alleged electoral malpractice. The alliance is demanding greater scrutiny of the electoral roll revision process and has raised concerns over changes to voter registration procedures and the deletion of names from electoral rolls.
Kharge said the Opposition would continue its campaign across the country to highlight its concerns about voting rights and electoral transparency.
