New Delhi: In a significant shift towards strengthening bilateral ties, India and China have made notable strides in their relationship following a pivotal meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping in Kazan, Russia. This strategic encounter not only marked a breakthrough in ending the prolonged military standoff in eastern Ladakh but also underscored the importance of cooperation between two of the world’s largest developing nations. As key players in the Global South, both countries are poised to leverage their partnership to promote global democracy and counter hegemonic influences.
The disengagement process in eastern Ladakh, completed late last year, marked a crucial step towards normalizing relations. The successful meeting between PM Modi and President Xi Jinping provided strategic guidance for improving ties, leading to strengthened exchanges and practical cooperation across various levels. This collaborative approach has yielded a series of positive outcomes, further solidifying the foundation for future engagement.
Recent diplomatic efforts have been instrumental in fostering cooperation. National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri have held key dialogues with their Chinese counterparts, highlighting the commitment to resolve bilateral concerns and advance mutual interests. As India and China celebrate the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, both nations are keen to build on past experiences and forge a path towards stable and sustainable development.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized that differences over boundaries should not overshadow the broader bilateral relationship. Instead, both countries should focus on mutual support and cooperation, recognizing their shared responsibility as major players in the Global South to oppose hegemonism and promote global democracy. By working together, India and China can significantly enhance the prospects for greater democracy in international affairs and strengthen the Global South’s influence.
