New Delhi: India has formally requested Rus sia to release 27 Indian nationals reportedly serving in the Russian military, amid concerns over their safety and well-being. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that authorities are in constant contact with the families of the affected individuals.
Speaking on Friday, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “As per our information, 27 Indian nationals are presently serving in the Russian army. We are closely coordinating with their families regarding this matter.”
Jaiswal also issued a strong advisory to Indian citizens against considering offers to join Russian military forces. “We once again strongly urge all Indian nationals to stay away from offers to serve in the Russian army, as they involve significant risks to life and safety,” he added.
The MEA emphasized that India is actively engaging with Russian authorities to secure the release of its citizens. “We have raised this matter with Russian officials in Moscow and with the Russian Embassy in New Delhi, requesting their immediate release. Efforts are ongoing to bring them back safely,” Jaiswal said.
Reports indicate that some Indians on student or business visas were allegedly compelled to join Russian military units, including frontline deployments in Ukraine. India has consistently requested Russia to release all Indians serving in support roles, such as cooks and helpers.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also raised the issue during his visit to Russia last year. Official figures show that over 150 Indian nationals have been recruited into the Russian military so far. Among them, 12 have lost their lives, 96 have been discharged, and 16 remain missing.
India continues to urge its citizens to exercise caution and avoid any involvement in foreign military operations, reiterating its commitment to safeguarding their lives abroad.
