Melbourne:
On a captivating Boxing Day at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), the 4th Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy saw Australia dominate the early proceedings, only for India to mount a spirited comeback. The day was marked by a series of half-centuries from the Australian top order and a resilient performance from India’s premier fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah.
Jasprit Bumrah Keeps India In Game
Despite Australia’s strong start, Bumrah’s three-wicket haul kept India in the contest. His ability to spark a middle-order wobble was crucial, as he dismissed key batters to restrict Australia’s scoring. Bumrah’s impact was evident, particularly in the third session, where he claimed the wickets of Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh, bringing India back into the game.
Labuschagne, Smith, Konstas, Khawaja Hit Fifties
The Australian innings was highlighted by impressive half-centuries from all of their top four batters. Debutant Sam Konstas set the tone with a blistering 65 off 60 balls, showcasing audacious strokeplay against Bumrah. His aggressive innings included a reverse-lap six off Bumrah, a rare feat against the world’s best fast bowler.
Usman Khawaja followed with a steady 57, his first half-century of the series, before falling to a poor shot. Marnus Labuschagne contributed a fighting 72, displaying some of his best form in the series, until he was caught by Virat Kohli off Washington Sundar. Steven Smith, with 68 not out, remained the anchor of the Australian innings, ensuring they stayed ahead despite the late wickets.
The day began with a quiet start from the Indian pacers, but once Khawaja found his rhythm, Konstas took center stage. His partnership with Khawaja was pivotal, adding 89 runs in just 116 balls. The second session saw a slowdown in scoring, with India managing to keep the runs in check. However, the third session saw a resurgence from Australia, with Labuschagne and Smith adding 41 runs in the first six overs after tea.
India’s fightback was significant, with Bumrah leading the charge. His spells, particularly in the third session, were instrumental in picking up crucial wickets. Despite this, Smith’s presence ensured Australia maintained a strong position, ending the day at 311 for 6.
