PANAJI: FC Goa is currently in advanced negotiations with Jorge Pereyra Diaz, the 33-year-old Argentine striker currently plying his trade for Mumbai City FC, IFTWC can confirm exclusively. Mumbai City FC, on the other hand, is not eager to extend the contract of the Argentine forward ahead of the 2024-25 ISL season.
Diaz began his football journey in Argentina with Club Ferro before making a move to Club Atlético Lanús. Throughout his career, he has represented various clubs including Johor Darul Ta’zim in Malaysia, Club Atlético Independiente and Club León in Argentina, Club Bolivar in Bolivia, and San Marcos in Chile. More recently, the 33-year-old played for Club Atlético Platense, where he was loaned out to fellow ISL side Kerala Blasters before joining Mumbai City FC in August 2022.
Diaz at Mumbai
In his time with Mumbai City FC, Diaz has made a significant impact, making 55 appearances, scoring 27 goals, and providing 8 assists. He has played in a substantial number of Indian Super League matches during the 2023/2024 season, featuring in 14 games and accumulating 1,115 minutes of playing time. Diaz has been selected in the starting XI in 13 of these appearances and used as a substitute once. He is currently ranked joint seventh in the Indian Super League goalscoring charts for this season, with a tally of eight goals, making him the top scorer for his team. Additionally, he has received three yellow cards.
Pereyra exhibits remarkable versatility on the field, adept at fulfilling various roles such as operating as a winger on both the right and left flanks, serving as a second striker, acting as the target man, and even slotting into midfield positions out wide. One of his standout attributes is his exceptional ball control, allowing him to swiftly turn and take on defenders with confidence.
When positioned as a striker, Pereyra excels at hovering on the edge of the box, skillfully evading defenders to create space for his goal-scoring opportunities. His ability to find that crucial extra yard before unleashing a shot on target is a testament to his sharp attacking instincts. Moreover, Pereyra thrives particularly in a two-striker formation, where he can effectively partner with another forward, both as a goal-scorer and as a provider, showcasing his dynamic playmaking abilities.
This skill set aligns perfectly with the tactical approach favored by Manolo Marquez, making Pereyra an ideal fit as a striker under his guidance.
Mumbai City FC currently leads the league standings with 47 points and is set to face Mohun Bagan Super Giant in their next Indian Super League fixture on April 15th. Diaz will be looking to end his chapter for the Islanders on a high, by leading them to their second ISL Shield in a row. In the previous season, Pereyra Diaz played 20 Indian Super League games for Mumbai City FC, scoring 11 goals and providing seven assists, and was a crucial centerpiece in their title-winning campaign.
