ST CRUZ: A question of jurisdiction has emerged concerning two of Goa’s major sports facilities — the Athletic Stadium at Cujira and the Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium at Goa University — after a local panchayat member claimed they fall under the authority of the Santa Cruz Village Panchayat.
In a letter addressed to concerned government authorities, Inacio Domnic Pereira, an elected Panch member of the Santa Cruz Village Panchayat, asserted that both stadiums are located within the jurisdiction of Santa Cruz Panchayat and form part of the Santa Cruz Assembly Constituency.
Currently, the Athletic Stadium is officially listed as being located at Cujira, Bambolim, while the Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Stadium is addressed at Goa University, Taleigao. However, the Panch member insists that despite the postal addresses, the geographic and administrative control lies with the Santa Cruz Panchayat.
The matter has now been referred to relevant government authorities for verification and official confirmation of the actual jurisdiction and constituency under which these stadiums fall.
The clarification is being sought not only for administrative purposes but also to determine which local body has the right to govern and maintain oversight over the facilities, especially with increasing usage and ongoing development in the surrounding areas.
