VASCO: A sudden thunderstorm accompanied by lightning caused significant damage to a residential building in Mangor, Vasco, on Tuesday evening.
While no casualties were reported, residents faced losses running into lakhs as lifts, generator sets, and numerous household electronic items such as TVs, air conditioners, and refrigerators were damaged due to the lightning strike.
The Vasco fire station responded promptly to the scene, ensuring immediate assistance and safety for the residents. Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar, along with Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Girish Borker and Mamlatdar Pranvijay Pandit, conducted a joint site inspection to assess the extent of the damage and explore compensation options for affected families.
“The lightning struck the building and hit the corner of the terrace, causing a small portion of the concrete to fall. Thankfully, no one was hurt, as no one was present in the area at the time,” said MLA Krishna Salkar, speaking to reporters at the site. “Many residents have suffered substantial losses as their electrical appliances, including fans, TVs, and ACs, were damaged by the lightning. We are here to assess these damages and determine if any compensation can be provided under disaster management. I am also exploring the possibility of offering help through the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund,” he added.
Mamlatdar Pranvijay Pandit confirmed the gravity of the incident and noted the preliminary findings of the inspection. “There have been significant damages due to the lightning strike. We have completed an initial assessment, and our report will be submitted to the Collector. Once the evaluation is done, compensation will be provided under the Disaster Management Act,” Pandit stated.
A resident of the building recounted the terrifying moment when the lightning struck. “It happened around 8:30 PM during heavy rain and lightning. One of the strikes hit the corner of our terrace. The lifts and generator sets in our building were damaged, and several electrical appliances like fans, inverters, ACs, TVs, and refrigerators were destroyed. The lightning also hit a nearby tree, which was burnt, causing minor damage to a car parked underneath,” the resident explained.
