CANACONA: Ratna Prabhugaonkar has been elected unopposed as the new sarpanch of the Loliem-Polem Village Panchayat.
Prabhugaonkar, who represents Ward No. 3, was elected to head the nine-member panchayat. She is the third woman to occupy the post of sarpanch during the current term, which has been reserved for women.
Canacona MLA and Minister Ramesh Tawadkar personally visited the panchayat office and congratulated Prabhugaonkar on her election. The felicitation was held in the presence of other panch members and Zilla Panchayat member from Poinguinim Ajay (Ajit) Lolienkar.
“I extend my best wishes to her for a successful tenure and for working towards the development and welfare of the people of Loliem-Polem. Wishing her all the very best in this new responsibility,” Tawadkar said.
Prabhugaonkar succeeds Nisha Chari, who represents Ward No. 1 and resigned as sarpanch last month after completing a tenure of two years and nine months.
Ward No. 6 panch member Pratiza Bandekar was the first woman to occupy the sarpanch’s post during the current term.
The Loliem-Polem Village Panchayat has four women panch members. With Prabhugaonkar’s election, three of the four women members have now served as sarpanch during the current term under the women-reserved post.
