A significant landslide occurred on Saturday morning along the Varnapuri-Sada Highway, a crucial four-lane port connectivity route, disrupting traffic flow and causing major inconvenience to commuters. The landslide, which took place at approximately 10:30 a.m., saw massive boulders and rocks cascading down a nearby hillock and onto the highway.
According to sources, although the landslide caused severe disruption, there were no reported injuries or fatalities. “There was a minor landslide in the same area around a month ago, but this has now escalated into a major event. Huge boulders and rocks have rolled down onto the road. The incessant and torrential rains in recent days are likely the cause,” said a local source familiar with the situation.
Vasco Traffic Police Inspector Shailesh Narvekar confirmed that immediate steps were taken to manage the traffic. “We received information about the incident around 10:30 a.m. and responded quickly. The highway authorities have deployed a JCB machine to clear the debris. In the meantime, we’ve diverted traffic to a single lane to maintain flow. This is a busy stretch, but with one side of the road blocked, we’ve placed barricades near the NCPOR institution to guide vehicles onto the other lane of the four-lane flyover,” Narvekar explained.
To ensure smooth traffic management, traffic police and personnel from the Mormugao police station have been deployed at the scene. Authorities are working tirelessly to clear the debris, but motorists are advised to exercise caution and expect delays while the situation is resolved.
