PANAJI: Governor of Bihar Rajendra Arlekar proposed that, like several other nations, India should take mandatory military training into consideration.
“Experts in our country should give a thought to it,” he stated. He suggested that in order to inculcate discipline, candidates for government employment should serve two years in the military.
There are efforts being made, as Arlekar said, to depict Goa as apart from the rest of India. “We are different from Bharatiyata,” he said in response to this idea. The perception that Goa has closer links to Portugal than to India is created by this distortion.
The governor’s comments emphasize the necessity for a cohesive national identity and the appreciation of Goans’ past accomplishments. His plan to make military training mandatory seeks to fortify national unity and improve government employee discipline.
Arlekar voiced worries about how people view Goa’s identity. He pointed out that there are misconceptions because there aren’t as many events in Goa that promote “Bhartiyata,” or Indianness.
“Many people want to project that Goa is different from others,” he stated. He underlined that some people attempt to convey the idea that Goa is disconnected from the rest of India.
The Governor emphasized that many Goans gave their lives in order to free India from British authority, even as Indian freedom fighters fought to free Goa from Portuguese domination. He emphasized how crucial it is to record these sacrifices.
“Their sacrifices should be documented,” he stated. Arlekar emphasized once more how important Goa is to India. He said that Nehru’s remark that “Goa ke Log Ajeeb Hai”—meaning that the people of Goa are unique—contributed to a misleading narrative. “What ‘Ajeeb’ saw in us is unknown to us. ‘Ajeeb’ is not who we are,” Arlekar said.
He was adamant about the importance of highlighting Goa’s position within Bharat-mata, or Mother India.
