New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Thursday held a telephonic conversation with Gideon Sa’ar, Israel’s foreign minister, to discuss the ongoing conflict in West Asia and its wider global implications.
In a message posted on the social platform X, Jaishankar said the two leaders exchanged views on the escalating situation and the many repercussions arising from the conflict. The discussion forms part of India’s continued diplomatic engagement with key stakeholders since hostilities began in the region on February 28.
The conflict intensified after joint military strikes by the United States and Israel targeted sites in Iran, prompting retaliatory actions from Tehran against several Gulf countries hosting American military bases. The escalation has disrupted regional stability and triggered concerns across global markets.
Jaishankar has been in contact with leaders and foreign ministers from multiple countries in the region, including Israel, Iran and several Gulf nations, urging de escalation and advocating dialogue as the primary path to ending the hostilities.
The ongoing conflict has also affected maritime traffic through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy route through which a significant share of the world’s oil supply passes. The disruption has raised concerns about energy security and supply chains worldwide.
During an inter ministerial briefing, the Ministry of External Affairs stated that India continues to remain in close contact with countries involved in the situation to safeguard its interests while encouraging diplomatic solutions.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described the situation as a challenging period not only for India but for the international community as a whole. He noted that India’s diplomatic engagement with various countries has helped address immediate concerns, including facilitating the passage of two Indian LPG vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.
Officials said India remains committed to protecting its energy security and maintaining stability in global supply routes while continuing efforts to promote dialogue and diplomacy as the conflict unfolds.
