MARGAO: The Margao Congress Block has alleged that an illegal road is being constructed through government-acquired land adjoining the Manohar Parrikar Indoor Stadium to facilitate a private real estate development project.
According to a press statement issued by the party, local residents alerted Congress leaders about large-scale mud filling activity taking place in a paddy field near the stadium premises. Following the complaint, Congress leader Savio Coutinho, along with party workers Aziz Shah, Damodar Onskar, Lincoln Gomes and Bonny Fernandes, visited the site for inspection.
The delegation alleged that a nearly 10-metre-wide road was being created by filling mud through government land, while tipper trucks were seen dumping mud into a nearby private paddy field.
Congress leaders said the flying squad was immediately informed and officials later arrived at the location to inspect the site, record measurements and capture photographs and videos of the ongoing activity as well as the vehicles involved.
Addressing the media at the site, Savio Coutinho questioned how such a wide access road could allegedly be permitted through government land for what he claimed was a private real estate venture. He further alleged that the work could not have proceeded without the “knowledge and blessings” of PWD Minister and Margao MLA Digambar Kamat.
Coutinho also drew attention to several residential localities in Margao that continue to lack even basic road connectivity. Referring to the long-pending demands of Sirvodem residents for proper road access, he alleged that despite repeated assurances over the years, the issue remains unresolved.
He claimed that, in contrast, the road being laid near the indoor stadium appeared to primarily benefit a private development project, with no residential households in the vicinity expected to gain from it.
The Margao Congress Block has demanded an immediate halt to the mud-filling activity and sought criminal action against those allegedly responsible for the work.
