MARGAO: The Margao Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Court has ordered the release of Francisco Dias (43), a resident of Par-Suravali, in the Rama Dnyanoba Suradkar murder case after the investigating officer reported that there was no evidence linking him to the fatal assault.
The order followed a further investigation by Maina Curtorim police, which found insufficient evidence of Dias’s involvement in the incident. Police Inspector Kapil Naik submitted the findings to the court under Section 189 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
The case dates back to August 27, when a Bullet motorcycle was reportedly stolen from the Suravali area. Suspecting Rama Dnyanoba Suradkar, a resident of Osmanabad, Maharashtra, of involvement in the theft, a mob allegedly intercepted and assaulted him at Nuvem. Suradkar was subsequently admitted to the South Goa District Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment.
Following the incident, Maina Curtorim police registered a murder case against five named suspects and several unidentified persons. The arrested accused included Greson Fernandes (28), Domingo Fernandes (52), Francisco Dias, Vinayak Das (32) and Suresh Pujari (43).
Dias had spent time in police and judicial custody before approaching the Sessions Court for bail. His bail application was subsequently rejected.
However, a follow-up investigation found no evidence connecting Dias to the crime. Based on the investigating officer’s report, the Margao JMFC Court ordered his release under Section 189 of the BNSS, without requiring bail, citing the absence of sufficient evidence to proceed against him.
Meanwhile, on October 28, the High Court disposed of Dias’s bail petition as infructuous after taking note that the JMFC Court had already ordered his release.
