MARGAO: The Margao Principal District and Sessions Court today has convicted Vikat Bhagat for raping and murdering Irish tourist in March 2017.
Vikat had also been found guilty of destruction of evidence.
Danielle McLaughlin, from County Donegal, Ireland was 28 years old, when she was found raped and murdered in Canacona on 14th March 2017, eight years ago.
Her body was repatriated to the Republic of Ireland later that month. A second post-mortem examination found brain damage and strangulation as the cause of death.
Vikat Bhagat, 31, was the only person who was charged in connection with the case. He denied the charges.
Over the years, the court case has experienced multiple adjournments and delays. Born and raised in Buncrana, County Donegal, Danielle McLaughlin visited India in 2017.
Along with an Australian buddy, the Liverpool John Moores University student had been lodging in a beach hut. In a nearby village, the two had been commemorating Holi, a Hindu spring festival.
