Panaji: A court in Merces has acquitted the accused in a 2019 hit-and-run case linked to the death of a 68-year-old woman in Campal, Panaji, after finding that the prosecution failed to establish key allegations beyond reasonable doubt.
The case pertained to the death of Remediana Do Rosario, who was allegedly hit by a Mercedes-Benz while crossing the road near the football ground at Campal around 5 am on December 1, 2019.
Following the accident, she was admitted to Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC), where she later succumbed to her injuries during treatment.
After examining the evidence, the Chief Judicial Magistrate observed that the prosecution could not conclusively prove that the accused was driving the vehicle involved in the accident. The court also noted that there was insufficient evidence to establish that the accused had fled the scene without rendering assistance to the injured victim.
With key elements of the case remaining unproven, the court granted acquittal to the accused, bringing closure to a case that had remained under legal scrutiny for several years.
