VASCO: Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC), led by Chairperson Leo Rodrigues, and the traffic department began a drive against many abandoned and scrap vehicles parked at various locations in Vasco.
Speaking to reporters, MMC Chairperson Leo Rodrigues said that around 59 vehicles were picked up in the first phase of the Drive in the morning.
“We had identified around 59 vehicles in the city, and we have issued the owners several warnings for the last month, but they have not paid heed to our requests. I later met Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar and the traffic PI Shailesh Narvekar, and we decided to give a final 8-day ultimatum. However, since they did not respond, we had to clear these vehicles to make adequate space for parking at various locations,” said Rodrigues.
He said MMC has decided to improve the parking space in Vasco and get dedicated and designated two wheeler and four wheeler parking spaces.
“We will also draw parking lines so that vehicles don’t double park or park haphazardly. We will have proper signboards and also start issuing fines to the vehicles parking haphazardly so that there is systematic parking in Vasco. We have begun our Drive in the city, and we will then start moving ward-wise and clear abandoned vehicles in every ward so that proper space is available all across the port town. We will keep all these vehicles in our MMC yard,” said Rodrigues.
MMC Councillor Vinod Kinlekar said that MMC had received a lot of complaints from people regarding these abandoned vehicles
“We have now taken a drive because Vasco is very congested, and parking space is extremely valuable, but these abandoned vehicles eat up a lot of space and hence this Drive was the need of the hour. We will continue this Drive and try and instil disciple in Vasco,” said Kinlekar.
