Mumbai: In a bold move to catapult Mumbai into the league of global economic giants, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has unveiled a comprehensive plan to transform the Mumbai Metropolitan Region into a premier growth hub. This ambitious vision aims to elevate the region’s economy from its current $140 billion to a staggering $1.5 trillion by 2047. Central to this strategy is the establishment of seven international-standard business centers across key locations in Mumbai, including the Bandra-Kurla Complex, Kurla-Worli area, Wadala, Goregaon, Navi Mumbai, Kharghar, and Virar-Bhoisar.
The economic growth trajectory is expected to be significantly bolstered by major infrastructure developments. A third airport for Mumbai is proposed near the Vadhvan Port, which is slated to become operational by 2030. This strategic location will also host a station for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train, further enhancing connectivity and economic prospects. The Vadhvan Port itself is being developed with an impressive annual cargo handling capacity of approximately 300 million metric tonnes, positioning it as a critical maritime trade hub.
To enhance connectivity within the region, a metro line will connect the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport with the Navi Mumbai International Airport, which is nearing completion with domestic operations set to commence in April. The Navi Mumbai International Airport, spanning 1,160 hectares, will have the capacity to handle 90 million passengers and 2.6 million tonnes of cargo annually, significantly boosting the region’s aviation infrastructure.
Maharashtra remains a top destination for foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows, and the state government aims to generate five million new jobs over the next five years. This comprehensive development plan not only underscores Mumbai’s potential as a global economic powerhouse but also highlights its strategic importance in driving India’s economic growth.
