New Delhi: As India and Bangladesh navigate strained relations, primarily due to widespread attacks on religious minorities, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached out to Muhammad Yunus, the interim government’s chief advisor in Bangladesh. In a letter sent on the occasion of Bangladesh National Day, Modi emphasized the significance of mutual understanding between the two nations and highlighted the enduring legacy of the Bangladesh Liberation War as a cornerstone of their bilateral ties. This gesture comes as India continues to express concerns about the safety of Hindus and other minority communities in Bangladesh.
In his message, Modi noted, “I extend my felicitations to you and the people of Bangladesh on the occasion of the National Day of Bangladesh. This day stands as a testament to our shared history and sacrifices that have laid the foundation of our bilateral partnership.” He further emphasized the guiding role of the Liberation War, stating, “The spirit of the Liberation War of Bangladesh continues to remain a guiding light for our relationship, which has flourished across multiple domains, bringing tangible benefits to our peoples.”
Both Modi and Yunus are set to attend the Bimstec summit in Bangkok on April 3-4, an event that could provide a platform for discussing these ongoing issues. The summit comes at a critical time, as Bangladesh struggles with political instability following the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government and her subsequent flight to India. This change has led to heightened tensions between India and Bangladesh, particularly in light of attacks on minorities, which India views as a pressing concern.
Despite these challenges, Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with Bangladesh, emphasizing the importance of “mutual sensitivity to each other’s interests and concerns” in advancing their partnership for peace, stability, and prosperity. External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar has confirmed that India maintains regular engagement with the interim government in Bangladesh, focusing on addressing issues related to minority safety and political stability.
