New Delhi: India batting stalwart Virat Kohli on Sunday described his cricketing journey as “nothing short of a dream come true,” following a remarkable performance in the first ODI against New Zealand in Vadodara. The 37-year-old also reached a historic milestone, becoming the fastest player to amass 28,000 runs across formats in international cricket, achieving the feat in his 624th innings. Only Sachin Tendulkar (644 innings) and Kumar Sangakkara (666 innings) have previously reached this landmark.
Kohli reached the milestone by driving a four off New Zealand leg-spinner Adithya Ashok, contributing to India’s successful chase of a challenging 301-run target. His 91-ball 93 earned him the Player of the Match award and played a crucial role in India taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Speaking at the post-match presentation, Kohli reflected on his career with gratitude and humility. “God has blessed me with way too much for me to complain about. I feel proud looking back at my journey and grateful for the love from fans worldwide,” he said. He added that playing the sport he loves has allowed him to bring happiness to millions, calling it a true blessing.
Kohli also elaborated on his approach during the innings, explaining how he balanced aggression and situational awareness while batting at number three. “If you push hard in the first 20 balls, you can put the opposition on the back foot. That’s what happened today, and it made the difference in the game,” he said.
Former India coach Ravi Shastri praised Kohli’s work ethic, calling it “second to none.” Shastri highlighted Kohli’s discipline in fielding, fitness, and net routines, noting that his consistency and dedication extend far beyond what is visible on the field. “Talent can travel, but routine stays put. Kohli’s professionalism is a system a way of living inside cricket,” Shastri remarked.
Kohli’s milestone and masterful innings reaffirm his standing as one of the greatest cricketers of his generation, demonstrating that excellence in cricket is built as much on invisible effort and discipline as on runs scored and records broken.
