Canacona: On Thursday, a tragic accident occurred in Loliem, Goa, when a car carrying a newly married couple from Karwar and two other passengers collided with a roadside electricity pole at Karai-Maxem. The incident happened as the group was returning home after visiting Shri Mallikarjun Devasthan in Shristhal.
The car, bearing the registration number GA-03 P 3771, was travelling on the old NH-66 highway from Poinguinim to Loliem when it hit the electricity pole. The impact was severe enough to break the pole into two pieces, which then fell onto the car, trapping it underneath. Fortunately, all four occupants suffered only minor injuries, although the bride sustained a head injury and swelling on one side of her head.
The injured individuals were promptly transported to the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Canacona via an 108 ambulance.
In a separate incident on the same day, a fish-laden rickshaw crashed into a newly erected road divider on the NH-66 highway at the Gulem section. The driver reported that he failed to notice the recently widened 150-meter road section, which had been in the news due to the Public Works Department’s (PWD) initial inept widening efforts. Following media scrutiny, the PWD had levelled the old highway section and constructed a divider to implement one-way traffic, but without adequate notification or traffic signals. The rickshaw suffered significant damage and broke the divider into pieces.
