PANAJI: In a significant legal victory for the people of Goa, the Bombay High Court has intervened to safeguard the operational integrity of Dabolim Airport by issuing an immediate stop-work order on a contentious flyover project at MES Junction, Sancoale.
This decision comes after the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) proceeded with construction without securing necessary clearances from the Indian Navy, sparking concerns over airport security and opposition from naval authorities.
South Goa MP Capt Viriato Fernandes said the project’s controversy deepened with allegations that a powerful minister, implicated in multiple scandals, backed the flyover to facilitate the closure of Dabolim Airport.
“This would have redirected all air traffic to Mopa, potentially benefiting the casino industry and accelerating large-scale real estate development in the area,” he said.
The legal battle was led by retired naval aviation officer Commander Atul Pant, supported by the “Forum Against Corruption, Illegality, and Destruction” based in Vasco.
South Goa MP Captain Viriato Fernandes also played a crucial role in the fight, emerging victorious alongside Pant.
Their efforts have ensured the protection of Dabolim Airport, preserving South Goa’s connectivity and economic interests.
