CANACONA: New Year brings cheers to the South Marine Range(SMR) as its Nesting site situated at the SMR Headquarters of Turtle Rehabilitation centre (TRC), Galgibaga was visited by the long awaited Mother Turtle and laid 113 eggs.
It was at about 4.45 am today morning that the mother turtle laid eggs and flipped back to the sea, as all the 113 olive ridley eggs were later shifted at the Nesting site of Galgibaga TRC and protected at Pit No. 1.
Incidentally, Galgibaga TRC’s Pit no. 1 with 113 eggs is the third Pit after TRC Agonda had a second pit with 107 eggs shifted at the Nesting site after mother Turtle visited the Agonda shore early 6.03 am on 29th of Dec ‘2024. It may be recalled that Agonda TRC received its first set of olive ridley eggs numbering 65 on 28th Dec and numbered as pit no. 1.
With all the three Pits, SMR’ s both turtle nesting pits at TRCs of Agonda and Galgibaga are protecting a total of 285 eggs.
TRC Galgibaga Nesting Site, which is located at the Headquarters of SMR, received its first Nest of 150 eggs laid in the first pit on November 16, 2023 last season.
The turtle nesting season normally begins in September, and the incubation period lasts approximately 50-55 days.
In an unexpected developments,last season mother turtle arrived at Galgibaga beach shore and laid eggs as late as May 12, 2024, and while the few hatchlings were born most of the eggs get spoiled during rainy season.
