CANACONA: In less than 24 hours a second mishap on NH-66 road at Gulem in Canacona, has once again brought to fore the treachery of the now infamous Canacona section of the National Highway.
Early, Saturday morning a Truck (KA-34 B-4131) bringing Mines material from Karnataka and heading to Mormugao, got trapped at Gulem after left-side of its Tyres went-off the road at the treacherous and dangerous Canacona section of Highway, having not even an inch of set-back to the tarred road. Due to frequent hotmixing, the road has attained an abnormal height, and a vehicle gets trapped below once its tyres goes off the road.
Incidentally, the left-sides of front and rear tyres the truck got so badly entangled below that the right-side types hanged in air, and the driver had no chance to bring back the mines loaded truck on the road.
‘A Crane needs to be engaged to pull back the stranded truck on the road, before resuming the mines transportation’, informed the driver at the site. The driver also expressed fears that the trucks left side tyres could burst during the retrieval as the entire weight has come on them.
The mishap had occurred at Gulem itself, where another truck on way to Karwar nose-dived and fell off the highway, but on the opposite-side and a few metres away on Friday.
Angry, locals cry foul over PWD’s inaction for sitting quiet and not doing anything to correct the faulty road section.
Incidentally, this the third mishap all involving inter-state vehicles in less than a week, with the first incident a dry concrete carrying container fell in the gorge at the dangerous and steep Curve at Karmalghat. There was heavy traffic disruption on the highway on the day of the mishap and while brining back the fallen container on the road. Even the chief Minister’s Motorcade took diversion via Agonda-Khola, while Chief Minister dr. Pramod Sawant was returning back after attending a function of launch of ‘Shram-Dham’ at Canacona.
‘VVIP’s gets safe passage, but the sufferers are common people, troubled day-in and day-out, and PWD or authorities only wacht people’s sufferings cooly’, complained a local.
