CANACONA – A 35-year-old labourer died on the spot while another had a broken leg as a Canter -Truck carrying Bamboos for Tourism activities turned turtle at Gulem in Canacona early Tuesday morning.
The name of the deceased is Porama Chutia, 35, a native of Assam. Porama got buried under the fallen bamboos, removed by police and fire services personnel, and shifted his lifeless body to Community Health Centre (CHC) only to be declared dead, informed police.
The body is shifted to Margao for preservation to conduct postmortem.
Another labourer Manom Gam, 18 years and also a native of Assam, had his leg broken after the bamboo came on him after the truck fell off the road.
According to sources, the truck (MH-07 AJ-3789) with the load of Bamboos brought from Ratnagiri was heading to Canacona. The bamboos were meant for Tourism activities in Canacona, added police.
After negotiating the sharp turn, and metres before the Bhumipurush temple, the truck, also carrying 7 labourers seated amidst the bamboos turned turtle and fell on its left-side wheels side.
Incidentally, at the same location, a truck had recently fallen off the NH-66 road where PWD had erected bamboo railings, and the Bamboos carrying truck fell exactly opposite in Tuesday morning.
The bamboos, too came rolling down along with all the 7 labourers, and while 5 came out from amidst the fallen bamboos, one of the labourers got himself injured is also rescued by others, while there was no sign of one. Police were informed, fire services also reached, and one of the labourers was found lying unconscious under the bamboos.
The lifeless Porama, was, however shifted to CHC only to be declared brought dead, informed police.
Police provided the name of the driver as Praveen D Passte, 24.
