PANAJI: The Transport Department has been tightening down on private automobiles being hired out to visitors after restricting rental vehicles to operating solely from their registered business locations.
Violations would result in a Rs 10,000 punishment and registration suspension, the government stated in a public notification. Recurring violations will result in the permission or registration being revoked.
In Goa, it has been noted that transport vehicles and private vehicles with white plates that do not have the proper authorization are being used illegally as rent-a-cabs. Such unapproved activities are against the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988 and the Rent-a-Cab Scheme of 1989, and they will face severe legal repercussions, according to a warning from Director of Transport Pravimal Abhishek.
According to the MV Act, first-time offenders risk having their registration or permit suspended, having their vehicle impounded, and paying a fine of Rs 10,000. Repeat infractions will result in the vehicle being impounded, a fine of Rs 10,000, and the cancellation of the registration or permission.
Abhishek has cautioned the public against using unlicensed taxi services since they violate the law and could endanger the safety of their passengers. For rent-a-cab services, only cars with valid permits (black HSRP number plates) should be utilized.
“Enforcement authorities have been instructed to carry out routine inspections and deal with infractions right away. The notification emphasized public safety and adherence to transportation laws, urging citizens to report unlawful rent-a-cab operations to the Regional Transport Office or Traffic Police Station that is closest to them.
